Independent video game developer Green Boy Games has announced that The shapeshifter, their game for the Game Boy portable system, will be releasing physical copies later this month. This game is a take on the original Game Boy, decades after its obsolescence via the Game Boy Color and a parade of other systems to follow.
Physical copies of The shapeshifter will also contain a number of additional items to increase the experience of playing this retro game. These items include a pocket guide, a collectible coin, a protective case for the game box, and a code wheel for use with the game.
897 backers on Kickstarter made it possible to create this game, funding the project with $ 72,000, followed by crowdfunding income. This successful campaign caused The shapeshifter to be mentioned on many different websites, including one where Green Boy Games received a six page article.
In addition, a sequel to this game, titled The shapeshifter 2, has been announced, and a Kickstarter campaign will be launched while development is already underway for the sequel to the game. According to the press release from Green Boy Games:
The shapeshifter 2 will be available in a cartridge packed in a box with a manual and many extras. The game will be fully compatible with all Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance handhelds.
The whole concept of revitalizing retro consoles and portable systems is lovely. So far, there has been a lot of talk about the Game Boy. Previously we have exceeded Ruisseau des Pins, a Game Boy Color game that was announced recently, and there are sure to be more games out there that Ruisseau des Pins or The shapeshifter in the works by various companies.
