PlayStation Vita Resistance original title and pitch leak

The PlayStation Vita Resistance 2012 game was originally going to have a different name and other tweaks, according to leaked documents.

Recently leaked pitch documents shed light on the 2012 Resistance game for Sony’s large handheld at the time, the PlayStation Vita. The presentation documents relate to the last entry in the series before the franchise apparently went silent. For this reason, these leaks are one of the first Resistance news for years.

Resistance was a Sony-exclusive first-person shooter franchise developed by Insomniac Games that rose to prominence in the late 2000s. Along with the Seemingly Dead Killzone series, Resistance was Sony’s response to other successful AAA sci-fi shooters like Halo. The games were set in an alternate version of the 1950s, where a hostile alien race began to take over the planet. Players are tasked with fighting against these terrifying creatures and working for a better future for humanity. Like many other PlayStation franchises, Resistance received a portable spin-off game developed by a small studio in 2012 called Resistance: Scorching sky.

According to the leaked documents broken down by TechRaptor, Resistance: Burning Sky was supposed to be a little different than it eventually turned out. First of all, the game had to be titled Resistance: Homefront, echoing other examples of video games whose names changed before release. The original title was likely chosen to reflect the action on the pitch and the personal story the game would present.

The pitch describes some of the narrative and tonal details. The players would replace Tom Reilly, a firefighter and veteran who uses his bravery and strength to protect the innocent from the ongoing alien threat. Themes of heroism and hope would also be present in the game mechanics, as the pitch includes details for a morality-slash reputation system that would lead to NPCs treating the player differently based on their actions. The game would also take advantage of the Vita’s touchscreen and gyro controls, which were innovative hardware features typical of Sony devices.

While most of these features were incorporated into the final product, these leaked documents are still fascinating to browse. They serve as a sort of time capsule from a different era in the game when first-person shooters and alien invasions were much bigger staples in big-budget titles. Specifically, these documents present a very different picture of Sony before third-person story-driven games became what the company was known for.

Specifically, the focus on shooter and multiplayer defined the Resistance games apart. While Resistance: Burning Sky was not a console version developed by Insomniac, it still carries the spirit of the series through these two pillars of gameplay. Even if a new entry in the Resistance franchise is unlikely, it’s always fun to look back on the series as a solid, if a little outdated, collection of video games.
