Hello and welcome to 10 Things in Tech. If this has been forwarded to you, register here.
Let’s get started.
1. The Pentagon canceled the $ 10 billion contract that Microsoft and Amazon were fighting over. The 10-year enterprise common defense infrastructure contract, which was awarded to Microsoft in 2019, reportedly helped the Department of Defense move sensitive data to the cloud. Here’s why they canceled it.
2. Nintendo’s new Switch will launch in October for $ 350. The biggest change is an OLED display, but Nintendo has made several small improvements as well. Check out the new Switch specs.
3. Read Andy Jassy’s latest email to his AWS team – and the first email to the company as CEO. His emails give us insight into his communication with staff: In his last note, Jassy thanked his cloud team and, in his first company-wide email, acknowledged that there was still a lot of work to do.
4. Jeff Bezos refused to take the elevators in the old Amazon office. Instead, the former CEO was climbing 14 flights of stairs every day, and his former assistant said he wouldn’t even sweat. More on the man who “never got tired”.
5. The family of a 15-year-old boy killed in a car crash with a Tesla on autopilot are suing. The combination indicates that Tesla’s autopilot is faulty and failed to detect the traffic conditions. Here’s what we know so far.
6. Residents say bitcoin mining is heating up a New York lake. According to locals, the factory – a gas-fired hub that powers at least 8,000 bitcoin mining computers – makes the lake “so hot you feel like you’re in a hot tub.” Get the full rundown here.
7. So many private jets have arrived in Sun Valley that the FAA has had to delay the arrival of the planes. Tech and media moguls arrive for “billionaire summer camp” – in such numbers that flights from across the country have been blocked to make room. More on that here.
8. Seven numbers show how much Jeff Bezos has grown Amazon in his 27 years as CEO. We’ve scoured years of business records to find key figures that show just how massive Amazon has become under Bezos’ leadership. Take a look at the statistics.
9. A startup combined Silicon Valley’s favorite elements – VCs and NFTs – in a viral cascade. Party Round turned a handful of venture capitalists who they saw as “useful VCs” into non-fungible tokens that were auctioned off last week. See who was “NFT’ed” (including a vampire Peter Thiel).
10. Thirteen of Salesforce’s top executives left in 2021. Salesforce has seen significant leadership upheavals this year, with the departure of Tableau’s former CMO, CFO and CEO and the arrival of four powerful new players. Meet them all here.
